Purpose: Proper posture is an important and influential factor in assessing people's health. Therefore, maintaining posture in inappropriate working conditions for a long time leads to the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders and postural abnormalities in the body. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and postural abnormalities in car repairers and their relationship with work experience and body mass index.
Methods: In this study, 60 car repairmen from Tehran and Alborz provinces with more than one year of experience was evaluated. The Nordic questionnaire was used to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and the Newyork test with photography was used to determine postural abnormalities. Chi-square test was used to evaluate the prevalence and Spearman test was used to investigate the relationship between abnormalities and musculoskeletal disorders with work experience and body mass index (p≤0.005).
Results: The results showed that forward head posture abnormalities (75%), Torticollis (73.3%) and, uneven pelvis (66.7%), respectively had the highest prevalence, and the lowest prevalence was related to abnormalities scoliosis and chest slightly depressed (3.3%). Also, musculoskeletal disorders in the lumbar area (56.7%), upper back and knee (36.7%) are the most common disorders and the lowest disorders are related to the ankles (11.7%) in car repairers. A significant relationship was found between work experience with uneven pelvis and forward shoulder abnormalities (p=0.004). Also, there was a significant positive correlation between body mass index and abdomen protruding (p=0.001). A significant relationship was found between work experience and knee pain (P=0.041), but no significant relationship was found between body mass index and any of the musculoskeletal disorders.
Conclusion: According to the results, there is a relationship between work experience and body mass index with postural abnormalities and common musculoskeletal disorders in car repairmen. But there is no relationship between body mass index and musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, it is very important to try to improve the level of awareness of these people in the field of proper posture during and before starting work.
